YESI Spotlight: Facilitative Election Laws
Our Youth Electoral Significance Index (YESI) utilizes data on demographics, conditions that support outreach, historical voting patterns, and projected competitiveness to produce a ranking of the states and districts where young people (ages 18-29) have the highest potential to cast decisive votes in the 2018 midterm elections.
The YESI combines several composite indices (i.e., scores made up of multiple, related indicators) to produce an overall score that ranks upcoming races. In a new series of posts, we shine a spotlight on several indices and indicators, detailing how they influence likely youth electoral significance.
The first post covers our Facilitative Election Laws score, which measures states’ approval and implementation of voting-related policies like online registration, automatic registration, same-day registration, and pre-registration for 16 or 17-year-old youth.

Director Kei Kawashima-Ginsberg and Director of Impact Abby Kiesa shared data at the #TurboVoteChallenge & #BrightSpotsSummit.
Kawashima-Ginsberg was also at the National Association of Secretaries of State’s #NASSNewVoterForum, presenting on our ongoing partnership with Opportunity Youth United around voter engagement.
We’re looking forward to other upcoming gatherings, including Tisch College’s Frontiers of Democracy conference in June.
