Working Paper 33: The Impact of Participation in Service-Learning on High School Students’ Civic Engagement
by Shelley Billig, Sue Root, and Dan Jesse
“This study compared more than 1,000 high school students who participated in service-learning programs with those who did not participate in schools matched for similar demographics and student achievement profiles. The intention was to estimate the effects of service-learning compared to more traditional ways of teaching similar subject areas. The outcomes measured ranged from civic knowledge, behaviors, and dispositions to school engagement factors, such as attachment to school and enjoyment of coursework, that generally predict academic success. Students came from sites in the southeast, north central, and western parts of the United States. More than half of the students in the sample were Latino/Hispanic.”

Individuals have different forms of learning preferences and styles. To consider a more vocational approach such as learning Language, English, Maths, Science, Politics, Religion and more core subjects such as art, photography, through community engagement and project involvements is a fantastic approach to teaching outside of the normal classroom. I did read this blog and it was very interesting. I liked the second part the most.

This is a most interesting study. I would have guessed that those students who participated in service-learning programs would have achiever higher results and exhibited higher values in their performance. Kutos to your research. I hope that it motivates many schools to implement similar programs.
Cheers!
