FEATURED: Predicting Civic Engagement in Urban High School Students
by Hugh McIntosh & Marco A. Muñoz
December 2009
In Working Paper #69, the authors examine the civic engagement outcomes that Jefferson County Public Schools (JCPS) in Louisville, KY, has chosen to promote in its students. Using a large sample in an urban school district, the study finds that the most important predictors of youth civic engagement were community service, political discussion, and environmental conservation. It reinforces the claims that community service, discussion of politics, and nonsport extracurricular activities boost civic engagement. As the authors suggest, the outcomes constitute a vision of civic engagement that sees youth as well-rounded citizens capable of engaging in civil, political, and problem-solving activities, both individually and socially. The findings provide intriguing evidence of the potential value of environmental conservation, conflict resolution skill, and character education as pathways to civic engagement.

Any young person involved in community development or services will reinforce the quality of community values and engagement. I am a personal believer of mandatory community and social development being introduced into schools as early as year 3. This is a perfect opportunity to improve the sense of belonging, and also educate our young children the importance of involvement from a political and social viewpoint.

I agree with that conclusion. It makes sense and thinking of kids who start getting involved at a younger age and it will continue through their whole lives.

Early training and engagement should be very helpful. Did the author only talk about youth or did mention an age as well where he “sees youth as well-rounded citizens capable of engaging in civil, political, and problem-solving activities, both individually and socially”?

If they are educated about the present conditions prevailed in the world, it not only trains their minds to take an active role in future but also makes them the responsible citizens capable of guiding the whole human family in the right direction.

I do agree with your conclusion. It seems to makes perfect that children who get involved when they are younger will continue with it through their whole lives.

In our place, children and youth are involved in civics and community services in which are supervised by the teachers and parents. This kind of activities can build confidence to the youth in helping develop the society. The youth are educated and at the same time are helping community services.

I think enviromental concerns really engage young people, it is a method of promoting civic responsability to them.
July 2nd, 2010 at 4:13 am
Engage young people and they respond ignore them and they find less productive ways of using their energy.
July 2nd, 2010 at 4:17 am
Agreed most people not just the youth respond well to being given responsability, its when peole are ignored that thing go wrong.
