Television Consumption and Civic Engagement Among 15 to 25 Year Olds
December 2007
Based on data from the Civic and Political Health of the Nation surveys (2002 and 2006), this fact sheet investigates the correlation between television consumption and civic engagement. The research found that in nineteen different civic activities young people who watch TV less than two hours a day participated in more civic activities than their peers who watch between two and four hours a day and those who watch four or more hours a day. Most notably light TV viewers were more likely to be involved in solving community problems (23.9 percent), raise money for a charity (30.9 percent) and be an active member of a group (21.3 percent).

I think that the result was easily predictable… That’s not surprising that the youth spend so much time watching television. But indeed that’s not so bad, much worth is that they spend so much time playing computering games and playstations… this is really a threat to their minds and consciousness.

From the ads you observe on TV to the music you discover on the radio. Furthermore art can behave as an agent for communal engagement in the improvement of the quality of life in our community and challenging times.

It’s interesting that the study does not take into account television content. I would think that viewing choices would also have an effect on civic engagement.
