Civics for the 21st Century

On September 21, our director Kei Kawashima-Ginsberg and former CIRCLE Director Peter Levine released a new white paper, “The Republic is (Still) at Risk — and Civics is Part of the Solution,” at the Democracy at a Crossroads National Summit in Washington, D.C.

The paper outlines some civic challenges and opportunities in the U.S., particularly as they relate to young people, and with special attention to the gaps and inequities that affect low-income youth and young people of color. New Data: Re-Updated RAYSE Index

Earlier this year we created the RAYSE Index (Reaching All Youth Strengthens Engagement), an interactive tool of comparative county-level data on indicators related to potential for youth civic engagement. The index provides research-based support for making the case that engagement has potential for growth and for deciding where to invest resources.

This month, we relaunched RAYSE with new data, including data related to the 2016 election. The index now provides an up-to-date, county-by-county picture of the conditions that act as challenges and assets to engaging ALL youth in civic life.
