by Mark Hugo Lopez, Karlo Barrios Marcelo, and Emily Hoban Kirby
June 2007
This fact sheet uses new data from the 2006 Current Population Survey, November Supplement, to determine the youth voter turnout in the 2006 midterm election. The data confirm early estimates by CIRCLE that 10.8 million young Americans voted in the 2006 midterm elections. The voter turnout rate was 25.5 percent in 2006, up 3 percentage points from the last midterm election in 2002. Also, this fact sheet includes information on voter turnout trend lines, voter turnout by demographic variables, voter turnout by state, and partisanship.

This is the digital millennium, and information is literally in the air. The free flow of information is absolutely critical to a democratic society. The University of Florida is a place of learning. Let’s not suffocate ourselves by depriving us of knowledge.

I think we’ll start to see a much bigger increase in youth voter turnout due to the heated political debates like global warming, energy, racial profiling going on nowadays.

I’m glad to see that youth voter turnout is up. To be honest, I didn’t vote till I was 23 or so and it was because I didn’t know how or care to find out. Now though I think we are being educated much more, as simple as it is, on how to register and have your voice heard.
