Youth Electoral Significance Index: Top 10 Statewide & Top 50 Districts
CIRCLE’s updated Youth Electoral Significance Index (YESI) is a valuable tool for any individual, campaign, organization, or institution that seeks to increase youth political engagement. The index combines demographic data, historical voting trends, and predicted electoral competitiveness to rank the races where young voters (ages 18-29) have an especially high potential to decisively affect the results of 2018 elections.
Our statewide rankings look at the top 10 Senate and Governor races where the youth vote could have a significant impact. These are largely elections for open seats or with vulnerable incumbents—including many Democrats in increasingly “red” states. North Dakota (Senate) and Minnesota (Governor) top each list.
We had previously released the top 10 congressional districts in our rankings, and we have now published the top 50. California (8 districts in top 50), Minnesota (5) and New York (4) lead the way, but the presence of districts in states ranging from Washington, to Texas, to Maine highlights that young people’s potential for impact reverberates across the country.
In its 28th year, NLS is an intensive, interactive, and intimate opportunity to connect with noted scholars and practitioners around current topics in leadership. The 2018 theme, “Leadership and democratic engagement: The role we play and messages we send,” is a critical, reflective, and practical examination of the intersection of leadership education and democratic practice. Frontiers of Democracy
The annual conference hosted by CIRCLE’s home organization, the Tisch College of Civic Life at Tufts University, will be held from June 21 to 23 in Tufts’ Boston campus. This year’s conference will focus on the ways democracy has been in retreat around the world—and the various ways individuals and institutions are struggling to protect it. Explore the 22×20 Campaign
22×20 is a network of media, cultural, and educational partners amplifying and diversifying teen voice, political expression, and media creation in the lead-up to the 2020 election and beyond. Launched in Fall 2017, the network is co-led by CIRCLE and The LAMP.
